Bob Janosov was a good and decent man. He was an extraordinary local historian…an inspired teacher…a man who was dedicated to preserving the best of our past.
Throughout the Wyoming Valley one sees the results of his work in historical markers that celebrate our history…in books that tell our story…in students that he taught and in the proposals he wrote to preserve our past.
As a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission he represented us with intelligence, dignity and class.
As a colleague dedicated to preserving the Huber Breaker, he was tireless in his efforts to save that magnificent monument of anthracite mining.

He was, without question, the most colorful, flamboyant, effective political leader Northeastern Pennsylvania has ever known.
Wherever he went, he left a trail of memories that were not soon forgotten.
Whenever he spoke, he talked about making the federal government work for the people he served.
Every waking moment of every day he invested his energies to advance the needs and concerns of his congressional district.

This fall the angel of death visited six families in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Like so many people, we saw the headlines. We offered a silent prayer for the victims, and the preoccupations of life took over.
The tragic headlines from Iraq continued. They heralded the painful circumstances that had befallen the soldiers who came from small towns like Athens, Carbondale, Hallstead and Montrose.
We saw the words. We thought about the events, and then we moved on, or we thought we had moved on.
