I’m in the ninth week of recovery from my open-heart surgery, and things have slowed down considerably. The incisions on my chest and left arm are almost completely healed. The incision on my right knee doesn’t hurt as much, but constant fatigue is driving me batty.
Kitch thinks I’m doing too much, and she may have a point, but I am watching myself and I don’t do anything strenuous. I write, and think, and edit a bit. I can’t spend much time outside as the sun just drains my energy.

The past few days have been hot and humid. That’s not good news for someone recovering from quadruple by-pass surgery.
When I was younger I loved the hot muggy days of summer, the hotter the better. Today the heat and humidity zap my energy, and I can do little but rest and take it easy. This comes as no surprise. I was warned that there would be days like this. Well, they’re here.

For most people Friday the 13th is an unlucky day.
For Kitch and me, Friday, July 13, was anything but unlucky.
It was a day of meeting new people. It was a day of wonderful correspondence, and a day of inspiring telephone calls.
This beautiful day of sunshine and mild temperatures began with a 45 minute telephone call from a former student, Jen Ryan Davis. Jen and her family live in New Jersey.

When Elaine Blessing arrived it was about 2:30 in the afternoon. It was a desperate day, and Elaine looked exhausted. She was running an hour late because she was covering for two other nurses who had family emergencies.
Her face was flushed and her clothes were wrinkled from the humidity. Nevertheless, she was cheerful and ready to do her work.
Elaine is a Gentiva nurse. Correct that, she is the longest serving, most experience Gentiva employee in our region.

Joanne and Stephen Galvin, residents of Wolcott, N.Y., were deeply saddened by the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and, like many Americans, felt compelled to contribute to the countless people affected by the tragic day.
Together, they designed the 9/11 National Remembrance Flag to memorialize the lives lost that day.
