Standing on a grassy knoll located between the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and the historic Wilkes-Barre Cemetery were three doctors, two businessmen, the Executive Director of the county’s Office of Human Services and a recovering quadruple by-pass surgery patient.
The sky was filled with dark clouds that were eclipsed by the brilliant smiles on the faces of the seven people on the ground who were bantering like teenagers at recess as they waited for the photographer to snap their picture. It was a moment of grand celebration and everyone assembled knew it.

The sign on the highway reads:
20 Years of Open Heart Surgery Success! Over 9,000 Cardiac Surgery Procedures. Heart and Vascular Institute, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital
Impressive…to be sure. If I had seen it one month earlier, I would have noticed it and thought little. Today as my wife and I passed it on our wedding anniversary, it meant a lot more.
You see, I am one of those 9,000 surgery procedures.

Nine weeks to the day after I had quadruple by-pass surgery, Kitch and I were sitting in the office of Dr. Joseph Briskie. The road to this visit was long and somewhat complicated.
Many years ago after my brother’s unexpected heart attack and death, my sister and I were advised to see a cardiologist. We did, and for the past 19 years I have been waiting for the inevitable.

For most of my life I have lived with the twin demons of anxiety and depression. For a very long time I did not know them by name, only by experience. When I was a youngster the worst thing you could get was chicken pox or whooping cough. Where I grew up, anything else one could handle with lots of spaghetti sauce.
